  1. It definitely could happen. My bird Champ a fancy canary had just died today :( …From time to time I would let him come out in the house in fly around. The children went over to pet him very very delicately but It startled him. He made funny noises and then kinda went limp. I knew something was wrong. He totally looked paralyzed. From time to time he would stand on his perch only to go back to the bottom of the cage. A bit later he died. It just shows how delicate they really are. I love you Champ!

  2. My pet canary died this morning and I am trying to determine why. I purchased it over a year ago along with another canary it shared a cage with at the pet store. The canary that died was red and the other one is white.

In the last month, the white canary has been pecking at the feathers surrounding the right eye of the red canary. I asked a friend what this could mean and she suggested that the white canary was bored. The birds have a tendency to be extremely messy and throw seed around so I started supplying them with less at a time so it wasn’t wasted. Last week, I found the red canary at the bottom pecking at seed on the cage floor. His appetite never changed, though from time to time I would hear him wheezing. I gave both birds acidophilis in their water to help with their immunity. The wheezing always subsided within 2 or 3 days.

He was a little more vocal than usual in the last few days, his appetite seemed a little lower than usual. I had observed him bathing and drinking. He seemed a little more tired than usual.

Now the white bird has started to exhibit signs of feather loss around one of his eyes as well. What is this? Is it possible that the white bird caught whatever the red bird had?

  3. What your red canary caught is a virus. It is common in all canaries and when it does catch it signs are wheezing and lose of appetite plus restlessness and early face molt. As soon as these signs are displayed take your bird to the vet right away remember every minute counts! The white canary might have it so take it to the vet for a diagnoses and what to do. Good luck!

  6. i am trying to get a good family pet. will canary birds bite you to death or are they sweethearts? should i get a male or female?
i have a cage but can males live together?

  7. Canaries never bite or peck, never. They are one of the best singing birds, and will entertain you throughout the day. Males are brighter than females and only males sing. So you better go for a male bird. A canary does not likes hugging and pampering like some other type of pet birds or animals, and feels comfortable and secure if its left on its own.

They like to take bath in shallow dishes, if possible every day, if not, at-least once or twice a week. Oh yes, just keep one canary in a cage, as 2 males will fight to death, and with 1 male and 1 female, the male will not sing ! It sings, to attract a female :-)

  8. When Obama was inaugurated as President yesterday, the wild canaries froze to death in their cage. The intention was to release them at the appropriate time. Their death was senseless, and probably painful. Even if they had survived until the time of their release, how would they survive in the cold Washington DC weather? They’re native to the Canary Islands, which is a tropical climate.

  9. I also suspect that my female canary had something to do with his death since i noticed them fighting before.
Also how do I know if my female canary is happy? it was easier with male because his singing indicated his level of happiness.

  10. Male and female canaries will “fight” it is not real aggression just part of their courtship eventually she allows him to mate with her after this “flighting” and flying around. That would not be why he died.

Male canaries sing to attract a mate not because they are happy or sad. Birds don’t have human emotions like that really.

You can keep her alone if you don’t want to breed babies. She will be perfectly OK. If you want to breed then buy another male if you want. She won’t care either way to be honest. How old is she? If she is older then getting a new male bird will mean probably he is left on his own one day in years to come when she dies. At some stage you have to have just 1 canary.

  11. My canary has scaly feet and her claws are getting quite long. So the first part is are there any natural remedies I can use for scaly feet? The second is what is the best way to trim the claws as I heard if you do it wrong they can bleed to death.

  12. Scaly feet can be caused by mites. I would suggest you get your bird to the vet. He/she can show you how to trim the nails. It really isnt hard. You can see the vein in the claw. Clip the nail just in front of the vein. Just in case you get some bleeding have some styptic on hand to stop it.

  13. “a curious and incongruous succession of cases had engaged his attention, ranging from his famous investigation of the sudden death of Cardinal Tosca — an inquiry which was carried out by him at the express desire of His Holiness the Pope — down to his arrest of Wilson, the notorious canary-trainer, which removed a plague-spot from the London.”

  14. It’s a metaphor: Wilson is a criminal who is likened to a plague spot on the face of the East End of London.

Opinion is divided over whether Conan Doyle means a literal trainer of canaries, or if “canary trainer” means a singing teacher.
